Trainers:
Patty Leblanc
Jenny Enslin

Training Site:
Stetson University

Audience:
Mainland High School teachers

Modules:
Evaluating Web Resources

Adaptation:
Conducted a workshop on "Active Classroom" as part of their START replication activities. The workshop agenda included an overview of Active Classroom as a method of organizing teaching materials for student use in a web environment. The web site also is tied to the Florida Sunshine State Standards, and activities can be tied to them. This workshop focused primarily on science standards, but other content areas can be addressed using the active classroom tools.

Participants expressed interest in further training on how to put their courses online using Active Classroom as a starting point.

Adaptation:
We scheduled a four-day START replication, 9 am - 3 pm, at the Teacher's Technology Resource Center at St. Thomas University.

We offered the training for free and we are reserving spots for all our PT3 partners first and then opening it up to other educators. One school provided stipends for the teachers they plan to send to the training. We modified the OLE Field Research Expedition, and included a videoconference with the Miami Museum of Science on June 20. Take a look! http://start.miamisci.org/img/replcations/replication_fl2.gif

July 17th, 2001 - January 19th, 2001

Trainers:
Jane Wolf

Training Site:
Miami-Dade County's OIT Training Facility

Audience:
18 principals from Region IV in Miami-Dade County

Modules:
Searching for Information on the Web
Evaluating Web Resources
Creating a Professional Portfolio Using PowerPoint

Adaptation:
Principals attended a 3 day workshop. Principals had the opportunity to explore different web sites and evaluate the usefulness for their faculties and themselves. Most principals lack the time to explore the web and therefore are missing out on excellent resources. The ability levels varied greatly and the materials were extremely helpful for individuals to proceed at their own pace.
All principals learned to use Powerpoint and most created presentations that would be useful in the upcoming months.

Training Site:

Audience:
Preservice teachers enrolled in EDU 320 ONLINE.

Modules:
Searching for Information on the Web

Adaptation:
The adaptation which was employed here was the fact that this course is offered online. Rather than working with material/information from a text alone, we employed internet searches for contemporary information and shared this information with "distance buddies". The period of time identified does not represent seven separate days of training, but rather the period during which students were permitted to work on the INTERNET SEARCH replication.

Audience:
Preservice teachers seeking the PreK/Primary Certification (age three through grade 3)

Modules:
Searching for Information on the Web

Adaptation:
These students are not only interested in the teaching of science, but in integrated curriculum throughout the PreK/Primary levels, so this is what we focus on. I set aside one day per week for my students to meet in the computer lab for this training, which is highly unusual for a course of this type at my institution. It is interesting to see that, even in this day and age, there is still some vestigial reluctance on the part of a few to add the technology to their repertoires. (One of my students didn't even have an email address!). We took care of that with Hotmail the first day. The best part is that when you infuse these activities into your own course plans, the students who are more "techno-savvy" begin to mentor those who are not.

Preservice Teachers enrolled in EDU 441

Modules:
Evaluating Web Resources

Adaptation:
The concept of website evaluation was infused into this course with a hearty "dose" of the message that you should not believe everything you see or read on the internet. The fact is that there are so many wonderful resources for teachers IF they have practice in evaluating not only the potential utility BUT ALSO the quality of the online offerings. The period of time identified here represents the period during which students were permitted to work on website evaluation.

Varied computer skills necessitated that we adapt the learning to fit a planned agenda. Participants enthusiastically searched the web for information, while evaluating possible web resources. Taking preferred elements of the OLE Field Research Expedition, teams collaborated as they designed a presentation based on a selected Everglades animal. The group was visited by Greta Parks, Museum Outreach co-ordinator, along with feathered and scaley friends. Curious and scientific questions were posed, bringing the workshop to a successful conclusion.
