Trainers: Howard Walters
Training Site: Scott Aquarium, Biloxi, Mississippi
Audience: K-12 Mississippi Teachers
Modules: Searching for Information on the Web Evaluating Web Resources Creating a Professional Portfolio Using PowerPoint
Adaptation: I implemented a workshop with funding from the Mississippi Department of Education to integrate technology skills with Marine and Coastal Science content. I used the START materials delineated above entirely and as written, but directed the participants toward evaluating web sites within pre-identified content areas pertaining to the ocean or coastal zones. Teachers then had to "capture" information, pictures, text, and links from web sites and develop and present to the group a PowerPoint Presentation incorporating materials they found.
The workshop was well received, and participant surveys indicated a need and desire to continue the workshop at a later date to "cover" the remaining START modules. I am working with MS-DOE to identify a date. We also have verbal approval to replicate this workshop next summer.

June 1st, 2001 - August 1st, 2001
Trainers: David Jay Hebert Susan Ross
Training Site: University of Southern Mississippi
Audience: The audience was students who are
enrolled in either the masters or Ph.D.
program in science education in the
Center for Science and Mathematics Ed.
Most of these students are teachers at
either the high school level or an
institution of higher learning. Many of
our students have significant experience
teaching in the field.
Modules: Searching for Information on the Web Evaluating Web Resources Using Technology to Enhance Learning Creating a Professional Portfolio Using PowerPoint
Adaptation: We made several small modifications to
tailor the program to the needs of our
students. On searching for information
on the web, we assigned the members of
the class different search engines and
web crawlers. We then discussed the
differences and compared the results.
We found that different search engines
are equipped to search for different
types of information.
The power point presentation on the
hidden web is useful.
We also covered some information not
included in the grant, but is necessary
for the course.

This program was the result of a grant obtained by Dr. Sandra Harpole, REI coordinator and is supported by the National Science Foundation. These experiences were designed to help teachers expand their curriculum foundations in life-based science and technologies. Dr. Harpole and I intertwined the above-mentioned modules into the first week of this four-week experience as follows:
June 4: Searching for Information on the Web 2:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
June 5: Evaluating Web Resources 12:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.

Trainers: Sherry Davis Glen Vanderbeek
Training Site: Tupelo Middle School, Tupelo, Mississippi.
Audience: middle grade educators at Tupelo Middle School
Modules: OLE Field Research Expedition OLE Online Research Expedition
Adaptation: Sherry will be conducting a START replication series of training workshops for middle grade educators at Tupelo Middle School, Tupelo, Mississippi. As part of this replication and OLÉ Online Research Expedition, two videoconferences are presently scheduled:
Monday, July 16, 2001 at 10:30-11:30 a.m. (CDT)
Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at 10:30-11:30 a.m. (CDT)
Mississippi START trainers and their preservice and inservice educators are cordially invited to
participate in this videoconference. You are welcome to create your own OLÉ Online Research Expedition (based on the Stennis scientists content areas) or email Sherry to find out how she plans to approach the Online Research Expedition at her site.
The videoconference will be conducted over the Mississippi Interactive VideoNetwork: http://www.etv.state.ms.us/inter-net/home.html />
If you and your group would like to participate, please contact Glen to coordinate the logistics. If your institution is a member of either the Community College Network or the Institutes of Higher Learning Network, then there would be no problem in connecting to this activity. Please be aware that many of the K-12 sites are inactive during the summer.
We will probably have at least two and perhaps three scientists for each session and most likely they will be the same persons each day. Once the scientists have been selected, Glen will email a short description of their area of expertise.
The Stennis scientists will most likely have the following "general" content background:
Scientist One: From the Propulsion Test Directorate at Stennis. Rocket engine testing involves certifying all Space Shuttle Main Engines within the NASA fleet of space shuttles as well as testing engines and components for future propulsion devices. The content areas would include: physics, mathematics and computer technology.
Scientist Two: From the GeoSpace Applications and Development Directorate at Stennis. Stennis is involved in the application of remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) to monitor earth systems and work with private industry and education to develop the spatial information sciences. The content areas would include: earth science, space science, mathematics and technology.

Trainers: Howard Walters
Training Site: J.L. Scott Marine Education Center and Aquarium
115 Beach Blvd.
Biloxi, MS 39530
Audience: 18 classroom teachers from Mississippi and Louisiana (9 from each state).
Modules: Searching for Information on the Web Evaluating Web Resources Creating a Professional Portfolio Using PowerPoint
Adaptation: As with the earlier workshops--we are teaching teachers the basics of population and community ecology as related to aquatic nuisance species/invasive organisms and vectors of infestation in the southeast U.S.
Teachers go through the START units on Searching for Information, and Evaluating Web Resources. They then search specifically for articles and photographs of invasive organisms related to assigned habitat areas. Using information obtained--they both print and compile "hard copy" posters and use PowerPoint to create electronic posters/presentations based on one habitat and assigned vocabulary. The emphasis is on getting them comfortable with using these activities in the classroom.
The START modules are mostly appropriate for direct use with students--and we are trying to get this buy-in from teachers. We still have the problem of very VERY limited computer resources in our school systems.
