Role-A-Like: College of Arts and Science

Based on the context in which you work which aspects of START did you replicate? Did you need to adapt the materials or create new products to meet your needs?

  • Can be done without adaptation.

  • Fits into existing curriculum as a goal to facilitate instruction

  • Can be easily adapted to fit different situations.

  • Modules can v\be used as a "stand alone unit"

What resources (e.g., people, time, support, $) were you able to access to support your work?

  • School district attractions: Science buildings on campus (Savannah), math and science hubs (North Carolina) AASU, wireless laptop and local area wireless network (Milledgeville)

  • Faculty field specialists and organizations: DNR, NASA, NOAH,

  • Dean funds (Arts and Science)

Describe any barriers you faced in replicating STARTWhat strategies did you use to overcome them?

Barriers

  1. Lack of equipment and facility

  2. Finding an audience

  3. Lack of technology support

  4. Fear of using/learning new computer skills: "lack of prior knowledge"

  5. Professors not computer literate

  6. Professors overloaded with tech. by using modules, self-directed learner

Strategies -

  1. Letter written to Academic Dean about how goals of START reflect NCATE / INTASC

  2. START needs to offer stipends or incentives for our time and efforts

  3. Become more proficient

  4. Involved graduate and undergraduate students

  5. Individual contacts made with a few interested faculties; trained faculty trained other colleagues.

Describe how you could expand the START model to reach new audiences.

  • Fit models to needs of audience (secondary education school teachers pre-service, university faculty and students)
