Role-A-Like: College of Education

Based on the context in which you work which aspects of START did you replicate? Did you need to adapt the materials or create new products to meet your needs?

Replications -

  • Evaluating Web Resources

  • Creating Your Own WebPages

  • Creating Your Own Professional Portfolio (Power-Point)

 Adaptations -

  • Evaluating Web Resources: Lab only has IBM, had to adapt modules to Mac format

  • Creating Your Own WebPages: Ways to evaluate veracity of web-based materials

  • Using Power-Point: Different backgrounds of students were not familiar with terminology of the various computer formats

Adaptations for each Replication:

  1. Modules were made to fit the needs of the major objective for each scenario. Potential plagiarism aspect.

  2. Adapt to appropriate age-level and audience

  3. Adapted format of modules to a very pragmatic application of virtual field trips that would be utilized by both pre-service and in-service teachers.

  4. Hyperlinks for searching on-line

  5. Not necessary to make changes for web-search, portfolio, power-point presentations. START modules very user friendly as created.

  6. Can modules with a pdf file be put on-line for the future to avoid duplication?

What resources (e.g., people, time, support, $) were you able to access to support your work?

  • Computer lab at SOE

  • Digital camera

  • Mobile cart with laptop computer

  • iBooks, connected to TI Internet via airport wireless access

  • Cooperation of field experience school

  • Technical support staff to manage server (Recommended for

  • the future: Put all student work on server to share projects)

  • Time allowed for START conference (excluding planning,

  • development and replication time)

  • Contact school personnel to establish learning objective

  • for in-service teachers

  • Funding for other grants for equipment and materials

Describe any barriers you faced in replicating START. What strategies did you use to overcome them?

  • Time in multiple ways

  • Redesign material for using front page instead of Netscape

  • Putting as emphasis on standards required by school

  • Georgia has pre-existing training material; overcame by going different direction from existing material

  • Getting Arts and Sciences buy-in

  • Being naive in beginning about all the little details that have to be dealt with Instructors will use technology (i.e. PowerPoint) but don't want to teach how to use

Describe how you could expand the START model to reach new audiences.

  • Get Deans involved in outreach

  • Examine other staff development initiatives (local, state, national) to explore opportunities for replication

  • Make resources known. Provide online connections to share ideas

  • Get other PT3 grantees involved

  • Continue to explore on-line delivery mechanisms for training

  • Continue to build partnerships between K-12 and Higher Education

  • Offer incentives for participation

  • Offer more workshops for other professors on campus
