Based on the context in which you work which aspects of START did you replicate? Did you need to adapt the materials or create new products to meet your needs?  

Replications -

  • How to Search the Web

  • How to Evaluate the Web

  • OLä Online

  • Creating Your Own Professional Portfolio (Power-Point)

  • Videoconference

  • Enhancing Instruction Through Technology (Blackboard)

  • Creating Your Own WebPages  

Adaptations -

  • Had to use PC version; use of Explorer instead of Composer

  • Made lessons for in-service teachers to use in their classes or in in-service; used to present to parents at open house; used for educational specialist to present their schools

  • Videoconferencing was done on site

  • Had to adapt totally because Blackboard changed its format

  • Used FrontPage instead of composer  

 

What resources (e.g., people, time, support, $) were you able to   access to support your work?

  • People: Technology Director, Miami Museum of Science, NASA, State universities, museums and aquariums, J.L. Marine Educators, district
  • Time: Staff development within a rectification course, after school, summer staff development, night for "Parenting Evening", Director of Com. 
  • School Support: District and region school, individual schools, paraprofessional
  • Money: Eisenhower Grants, school district funds, principal allocations, Chapter 1, school staff development funds  
Describe any barriers you faced in replicating  START.  What strategies did you use to overcome them?  
  • Time

  • Bureaucracy

  • Focus of school system not on this type of use

  • Software availability ̉ modules need to be modified to accommodate the available software

  • Extended Day tutoring

  • How staff development are allotted/some areas have no days at their discretion

Describe how you could expand the START model to reach new audiences?

  • Use for in-service teacher re-certification in technology, lesson development, web pages, etc.

  • Parent education ̉training, paraprofessionals train administrators

  • Branch to centers of teacher education: Pre-service

  • Students ̉ Creating Web Pages and How to Search the Web

  • Connection with other teachers and parents

  • Make more flexible with different web browsers

  • Have open-ended assignments
