Abstract:

MSEC-- represents a consortium of the Mathematics and Science Program, schools in four rural counties, Fort Bragg elementary schools, and the School of Education. The consortiumĖs goal is to provide sufficient opportunities for pre-service and in-service teachers to develop, teach, and assess the effectiveness of technology integrated curriculum units with high need rural students. MSEC-Project START set out to accomplish the goals with four project phases.  In Phase I, the University Project START trainer replicated the START training for five in-service teachers and modeled integrating technology in methods courses for elementary education majors.  In Phase II, 25 in-service teachers from surrounding counties participated in a series of 10- hour technology training workshops during the 2001 Summer and Fall Semesters. In Phase III, link faculty members and preservice teachers with technology proficient k-12 teachers in order to increase pre service teachers opportunities for observations and hands on experiences with planning and integrating technology in the curriculum.

Presenters:
Ernest Bibby, Director Of Technology And Secondary Education Granville County Schools, Oxford, North Carolina
Jake Brown, Associate Professor, Mount Olive College Mount Olive, North Carolina

Abstract:

The North Carolina team of Ernest Bibby, Jake Brown, and Willis Brown conducted a training workshop for the faculty of Carver Elementary School in Mount Olive, North Carolina (Wayne County). This workshop was held May 30-31, 2001. It consisted of Modules #1 (Searching for Information on the Web), #2 (Evaluating Web Resources), #3 (Using Technology to Enhance Learning), and #4 (Creating a Web Page).

During the 2-day workshop, 23 faculty members took advantage of this training to earn renewal credit. Most of the participants, 90%, strongly agreed that the evaluation criteria had either been met or would be valuable to them in future endeavors.

Comments included references to changes in feelings toward technology and the use of technology in classrooms they were responsible for. Comments also included positive references to the materials created by the START project.

In addition to the Carver Elementary School workshop, these START materials have been used in our college classrooms. Several of the modules have been used to introduce students to web sites and training them to evaluate these sites. The introduction to PowerPoint continues to be accomplished in our classrooms at Mount Olive College
