This
tour focused on viewing original documents that have been donated to the
Smithsonian since its inception. Dr. Pamela Henson explained that due to
their age and delicacy, in order to view them in close proximity they are
covered with a special acid-free plastic, and preserved in controlled
temperatures. They also must be handled with gloves that resist static and
protect the documents from the natural oils secreted from human
fingers.
The
last will and testament of James Smithson; an account of Lincoln's
assassination from the diary of Mary Henry, a
close family friend of the Lincoln family; and a letter written to the
Smithsonian from the Wright brothers discussing their dream of building
the first Ïflying machineÓ were among the historic artifacts
examined by participants.
