Project START, a PT3 Catalyst grant, provides higher
education arts and science and education faculty in six south
eastern states (Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North
Carolina, and South Carolina) with tools and training to help
prepare tomorrow's teachers to integrate technology-rich learning
resources into science curriculum.
Beginning in fall of 2000, a series of four-day Professional
Development institutes will be held for state facilitation teams
composed of key stakeholders committed to initiating preservice
reform. The institute will model faculty training modules, explore
technology-rich learning materials, include scheduled opportunities
to view exemplary practice and provide time for planning replication.
START will continue to support facilitation teams as they implement
the model in their own state through online mentoring and technical
support, a robust START website, and a regional conference to
highlight challenges, successes and further collaborative opportunities.
START Institutes will provide participants with the tools
to train others to:
- navigate the World Wide Web and to find science resources
using effective search strategies
- evaluate web sites that are valuable in addressing National
Science Education Standards
- discover a variety of available online courses, how these
materials can be used most effectively and the process for developing
and applying criteria for evaluating online courses
- explore mechanisms, strategies and resources for electronic
collaboration
- use videoconferencing to enhance teaching and learning
- create professional portfolios using presentation software
and web-based tools
- create professional educator home pages on the World Wide
Web
- replicate the strategies and materials provided at the START
Institute
Twenty-four participants, in teams of three, will be selected
by the Miami Museum of Science and SERVE to attend the Institute
from your state. Ideally, each team should consist of a professor
from the School of Education, a science professor from the College
of Arts and Sciences, and a local school district official. Other
attendees will include representatives from the State Department
of Education, the Eisenhower Consortium@SERVE, and the Center
for Children and Technology.
Notification of acceptance will be sent directly to applicants
selected to participate three weeks prior to the event. Acceptance
is required for participation. Additional information including
specific details about locations and times, will be included
in the notification letter.
Institutes take place at:
Miami Museum of Science
3280 South Miami Avenue
Miami, Florida 33129
Individuals selected to attend the Institute will have the
cost of institute registration workshops and materials paid for
by grant funds. Additionally, participant transportation, housing
(two participants per hotel room) and meals are also included.
You can apply online by filling out the Institute
Facilitation Team Application.
